Crows have always held deep symbolism for me. As a child, my mother had an entire murder that she fed, much to the dismay of our neighbors. They were loud, descended on the yard like a cloud of black smoke and unapologetically took up space. We lived in the city and the crows knew that there was always a constant food source at our house so they made our place a routine hang out. I learned a lot from watching them. Years later, living in a different house, my mother found a baby crow that had fallen out of a tree and was abandoned. She nursed it back to health and cared for it until it was strong enough to fly away on its own, but it still came to visit us every now and then. That crow taught me about perseverance.
Crows are amazing, resilient creatures. They have the ability to adapt to their surroundings. They are often associated with deep change and transformation. They are messengers and can be a bridge between the human and spirit world, delivering intuition and knowledge to us.
With profound change comes uncertainty. This can evoke fear in some. But the crow asks you to stand your ground and stay in your magic. Have you ever heard a crow stay quiet? Nope. They call out. Loudly. Crow asks you to speak your truth and move through change, even when fear is trying to shove the words down your throat and silence you. Change is messy. It's loud. It's necessary.
Crow asks you to sit with yourself. To embrace the shadow, those scary parts of yourself that you don't want to face. This medicine asks you to walk through your fears, torch in hand, knowing that life is an ever changing cycle of death and rebirth, and there is always light on the other side. Your fears may be telling you that you'll never make it. Crow says you're just beginning again.
In the spirit of crow, I've included a short ritual below to help dissolve fear:
-Take a moment to ground yourself. Sit in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. When you are ready, light a black candle (black is a symbol of protecting and dispels negative energy.)
Place or visualize a black feather at your heart center and speak your fears out loud. Get it all out.
When you are ready, acknowledge your fears by declaring "I see you, and I release you."
Now imagine your fears dissolving into smoke and being carried away with a wave of your feather.
When you feel that it has all vanished, end by thanking the universe, and the spirit of crow.
