" When I was a boy & I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people helping." -Mr. Rogers
Where would our world be, if not for the helpers? To be a helper means giving of yourself, your time and energy-both mentally and physically. It is uplifting, soul satisfying work that only makes you want to help more and more. For many of us, it's as much a part of us as the beating of our heart. We were simply born to help others.
But being a helper comes with a price. Sometimes we give so much that we leave ourselves exhausted, weary and empty. The world is heavy. At times it hums with an almost frantic energy of needing. If we aren't careful we can get swept away in the current of it all.
This first post in my series of self care is about the sacred pause.
The sacred pause is the intentional act of stopping. Maybe only for a minute. Maybe for an entire evening. It's a time of being consciously present. It is a spiritual, necessary moment that brings you back to yourself. It's a pause from the mental and physical noise around you. It is holding space for yourself, like you do for so many others.
In mindfulness and mediation circles, this practice can help us disrupt our autopilot mode. Instead of just going through the motions, the sacred pause allows us the space to invite in different choices & thought patterns. It allows us to take off the heaviness of the world and set it to the side for a little while. It is a necessary ritual in a world that is constantly demanding our energy.
Here is an affirmation That you can use to kick start your own sacred pause ritual:
"I step out of the storm for a heartbeat. I remember who I am. I call my power and energy back to me, so that I may return with new hope."
Sometimes the act of being is more important than the act of doing. Honor yourself by allowing your spirit the time it needs to reset until you are ready to jump back in, this time with more grace and power.
